Chet Douglas

Name: Chet Douglas

Description: He is tough since he played blitzball and was able to tackle Gene. Although he is not competitive. He likes to study and he plays the trumpet.

Age: Not Given

Jobs: He does not have a job but he is a student a Devon.

Relationships: Gene does not talk about him having or not having friends.

Symbolism: Chet Douglas likes to study and is physically fit but not to buff and so this picture represents him well.

Character Analysis: Chet Douglas likes to study and is Gene's only real competition to be valedictorian of their class. He is there when Finny and Gene first jump out of the tree. Finny thinks Chet is smarter than Gene when he says, "Fat chance you've got, anyway, with Chet Douglass" (Knowles 52). "Chet is also extremely talented at tennis and trumpet playing, but, according to Gene: 'he had an underlying obliging and considerate strain which barred him from being a really important member of the class" (Knowles 132).
Character-Theme-Tie-In: If Chet Douglass was not there Gene would not have a reason to study so hard to be the head of the class. He would not have been in such a bad mood when Finny wants him to see Leper jump out of the tree while he is studing, and Gene may not have forced Finny off the tree.

Brinker Hadley

Name: Brinker Hadley
Description: He is the 'Politician' of the school, cause he is active in student government. He also goes to the Butt room to smoke when he wants to. He is six feet but is not in sports.
Age: Not given
Job: Student at Devon, is in student government
Symbolism: This picture shows someone who, like Brinker, looks tall enough like they could play sports, wants to be a politician, and can be liked by everyone just like Brinker.

Character Analysis: Brinker Hadley is very political at Devon. Almost everyone likes him. He likes to find out the whole truth about everything, including Finny's fall. He notices Gene choose Finny as his roomate yet Finny was not going to be at school till winter so gene gets the all of the room for himself for now. Brinker quickly becomes the first one to accuse Gene when he says, "You fixed it. You knew all the time. I'll bet it was all your doing."(Knowles 88) Brinker is not the best politician because Gene was able to talk his way away from Brinker when they were at the Butt room. Brinker can be a little physical sometimes like when he is bringing Gene into the Butt room. "Here's your prisoner, gentlemen,' announced Brinker, seizing my neck and pushing me into the Butt room ahead of him, 'I'm turning him over to the proper authorities."

Character-Theme-Tie-In: He gets Gene to finally admit that he forced Phineas off the tree and it sort of interrupts the peace inside Gene.
